European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights
Nicolas Schmit is European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights. A member of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP), he was previously a member of the government of Luxembourg from 2004 to 2019 serving as Minister for Labour, Employment and the Social and Solidarity Economy (2013-2018), Minister for Labour, Employment and Immigration (2009-2013), Minister Delegate for Foreign Affairs and Immigration (2004-2009), Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Luxembourg to the EU (1998-2004), and Member of the Council of State (1991-2004). He was also a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) in 2019.
